Creators Log - Jon Moxley - AEW Wrestler
A quick and easy cosplay for one of my favorite wrestlers.
Welcome to Creators Log - a log of the who, why, and how behind my cosplays. For this first entry, I look at a cosplay of one of my favorite wrestlers, Jon Moxley.
Cosplaying as Jon Moxley
The Character
Jon Moxley is currently signed to All Elite Wrestling (AEW) where he is a 3x AEW World Champion and 1x International Champion. He makes appearances for both New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW) and Game Changer Wrestling (GCW) and has won championships in both promotions.
Moxley had quite a run in the independent circuit where he developed a reputation for being a tough-as-nails hardcore wrestler and brawler. This reputation led to him being signed by World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) where he took on the name Dean Ambrose.
While in WWE he was part of the faction The Shield and would go on to win the WWE Championship, Intercontinental, United States, and Raw Tag Team Championships.
Moxley has become known for his toughness both inside and outside of the ring and has found a connection with the fans through his tough-as-nails, no-nonsense personality that is not far from the true personality of the man playing the character.
This video is from Moxley’s AEW debut. A good shot of the inspiration starts around the 20 second mark.
The Inspiration
I have been a fan of his in-ring persona since my first exposure to him. His debut with AEW in 2019 showed a return to his hardcore attitude that was seen in his independent run before he joined WWE. He is one of those wrestlers that draws an instant reaction from people the second his music hits. His swagger, confidence, and aggressiveness are noticeable from when fans first see him walk to the ring before the bell even sounds.
He also is very untraditional in that he enters the ring through the crowd instead of the entrance ramp, and does not wrestle in traditional boots and spandex tights. This all adds to the hardcore persona he carries with him.
His ring gear seemed pretty simple to replicate and as one of my favorite wrestlers, this cosplay was a no brainer to create.
The Process
It was a very simple process. The full list of materials and links are below.
Cutoff black denim vest (Amazon),
Moxley t-shirt (Pro Wrestling Tees)
Pair of navy camo pants (purchased online),
Pair of black boots (I have had a pair forever),
Can of orange spray paint (Walmart)
AEW World Title Belt (Amazon) the real replicas are reallyyyyyy expensive).
I grabbed some poster board and practiced making the orange “MOX” on the back until I had it down. I didn’t shake the can as much as usual as I wanted a thicker and more drippy appearance. Once that was dried and clear coated, The vest was done!
The End Result
A very easy-to-wear and comfortable cosplay that has been worn to shows and wrestling conventions alike. I got to meet Moxley as part of the 2023 edition of Starrcast (wrestling fan convention) and of course, I rocked the vest (he had switched to darker ring gear at this point so I opted for black jeans instead of the camo pants). I took a normal picture with him and when the handler went to give me my phone back I said “Wait can I get one with the vest?” Mox responded with “Oh yeah good call”. He is not known for being a super talkative person (not rude in the slightest, just a quiet person). Getting that response from him made my entire weekend.
